So, grab a cup of tea, settle in, and let's delve into the fascinating world of rat care!

Choosing Your Rat

Where to Find Your New Bestie:

  • Shelters and Rescues: We might be a little biased, but we truly believe that adopting from a shelter or rescue like ours is the best way to go! You'll be giving deserving rats a second chance at happiness, and you'll be helping us make space for even more animals in need. Plus, you'll have our amazing team to guide you every step of the way. We can help you find the perfect rat(s) to fit your lifestyle and personality, and we'll provide you with all the information and support you need to give your new furry friend the best possible care.

Things to Consider Before Bringing Your Rat Home:

  • Personality: Just like us, every rat has their own unique personality. Spend some time getting to know the rats at the rescue. Some might be social butterflies and love to climb and play, while others might be a bit shy and need a little extra time to warm up. We can help you understand their different personalities and choose a rat that will thrive in your home.

  • Lifestyle: Rats can live for 2-3 years, so it's a commitment! Think about your lifestyle and how a rat would fit into it. Do you have enough space for a cage and playtime? Are you prepared to provide them with the care and attention they need?

  • Companionship: Rats are incredibly social and thrive in the company of other rats. We always recommend adopting at least two of the same sex. Having a companion helps prevent loneliness and boredom, and it's wonderful to watch them interact and play together. Solo rats require a lot of attention and enrichment from their humans.

  • Sex: If you're not planning on breeding rats (and we generally don't recommend it!), it's best to adopt rats of the same sex to avoid unwanted litters. We can guide you on sexing rats and help you choose compatible companions.

  • Age: Do you want a young, energetic rat or a more mature, laid-back companion? Both young and older rats have their own unique charms, and we can help you find the perfect fit for your family.

Housing Your Rat

Creating a Safe and Spacious Haven:

  • Cage Size: The bigger the cage, the better! Rats are active and curious, and they need plenty of space to climb, explore, and play. A multi-tiered cage with plenty of vertical space is ideal. The minimum recommended cage size for two rats is 2 cubic feet, but larger is always better.

  • Cage Material: Wire cages with solid floors are a popular choice for rats. Avoid cages with wire floors, as they can hurt their feet. Aquariums are not suitable for rats, as they have poor ventilation.

  • Bedding: Choose a bedding that is comfortable, absorbent, and safe for your rats. Avoid cedar or pine shavings, as they can be harmful to their respiratory system. Good options include paper-based bedding, aspen shavings, or fleece liners.

Enrichment:

  • Essential for Happiness: Rats are intelligent and curious, and they need plenty of enrichment to keep them happy and healthy.

  • Toys: Provide a variety of toys, such as chew toys, tunnels, hammocks, and cardboard boxes, to encourage exploration and play.

  • Climbing Opportunities: Rats love to climb! Provide them with ropes, ladders, and shelves to satisfy their natural instincts.

Food and Water:

  • Food: Rats are omnivores, so they need a diet that includes both plant and animal matter. A good quality rat food should be the staple of their diet, supplemented with fresh fruits, vegetables, and occasional treats like cooked eggs or mealworms.

  • Water: Make sure your rats always have access to fresh, clean water. A water bottle or a heavy ceramic bowl is a good way to provide this.

Keeping Your Rat Healthy: A Guide to Wellness

We all want our furry friends to live long, happy, and healthy lives! This section will give you the knowledge and tools to keep your rats in tip-top shape. Remember, prevention is key, and regular checkups with an exotic vet are crucial for catching any potential health issues early on.

Signs of a Healthy Rat

  • Bright Eyes and Shiny Coat: A healthy rat has bright, alert eyes and a smooth, glossy coat.

  • Active and Alert: They should be active and curious, exploring their environment and interacting with their cage mates.

  • Good Appetite: Healthy rats have a healthy appetite and enjoy their food.

  • Regular Poops: Keep an eye on those droppings! Healthy rat droppings are dark brown and firm.

Common Health Problems in Rats

Even with the best care, rats can sometimes experience health issues. Here are some common ones to watch out for:

  • Respiratory Infections: These are common in rats and can be caused by bacteria or viruses. Symptoms include sneezing, coughing, and discharge from the eyes or nose.

  • Tumors: Rats are prone to developing tumors, especially as they age.

  • Parasites: Rats can be affected by external parasites like mites and lice, as well as internal parasites like worms.

  • Ringworm: This is a fungal infection that can cause hair loss and skin lesions.

What to Do if Your Rat is Sick

If you notice any signs of illness in your rat, it's important to contact an exotic veterinarian who specializes in rat care right away. Early diagnosis and treatment can make a big difference in their recovery.

Finding an Exotic Vet

Not all vets are experienced in treating rats. It's important to find an exotic vet who has specific knowledge and experience in rat care. You can ask your local animal shelter or rescue for recommendations, or search online for exotic vets in your area. We use Westpark Animal Hospital and see Dr Stubbs for most of our vet services.

Preventing Illness

  • Cleanliness is Key: Keep your rat's cage clean and dry to prevent the spread of bacteria and parasites.

  • Balanced Diet: A balanced diet with a good quality rat food, fresh fruits and vegetables, and water is crucial for maintaining good health.

  • Stress Reduction: Stress can weaken the immune system, so provide a calm and comfortable environment for your rats.

  • Regular Vet Checkups: Schedule regular checkups with an exotic vet to monitor your rat's health and catch any potential problems early on.
